Can you tell the difference between AI generated face from real people?
The New York Times posted a image of 10 people, about 18 month ago.(1-22-2024)
The top five images were all of real people, while the bottom five were generated by AI.
In the experiment's results, the second photo from the right on the top row, which was a real person, was correctly identified by 90% of participants. Conversely, the second photo from the right on the bottom row, which was AI-generated, had a correct identification rate of 82%. Both photos were analyzed as being relatively easy to identify whether they were real or AI-generated.
However, the remaining eight photos were extremely difficult to identify, with error rates reaching approximately 90%. In particular, the five photos on the bottom were so intricately created that they were nearly indistinguishable from actual photos, making them hard to tell apart with the naked eye.
Hyperrealism: More Real Than Real
Until recently, even when AI generated near-real figures, there were often subtle, unnatural elements that made it relatively easy to identify them as non-existent people—for example, two identical ears as if reflected in a mirror, or eyes looking in the exact same direction.
However, as AI technology has advanced, it has overcome these limitations. The AI researchers who created the images featured by The New York Times stated that the generated virtual individuals are so close to average human facial proportions that they do not arouse suspicion among experiment participants.
And those images were created 18 months ago. Regarding the fast speed of technological acceleration, we will be unable to distinguish AI face from real people.
